Things Your Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist Doesn’t Care About

The world of pelvic floor physical therapy can be a little intimidating to some people. Let me start by telling you that pelvic floor PT is a judgement-free zone. Seriously. While we like to keep things light and joke about “there’s no such thing as TMI (too much information)” at Shift Physical Therapy, it’s actually the truth. When people are seeking help for their pelvic floor symptoms, it can seem a little overwhelming to be sharing such personal information and even more overwhelming to think about having a medical professional spending time looking at your vulva.

So, let me share some things that your pelvic floor PT does NOT care about:

  • Whether or not you have shaved your legs before your appointment

  • Whether you shave, trim, or are completely natural in your pubic hair region

  • What your vulva looks like (well, we care that is looks HEALTHY), but variety in color, shape, and size of structures is NORMAL

  • If you leak urine or pass gas during the examination

  • If you’re having your period

  • Whether or not you showered before your appointment - many women are coming to us in the early postpartum days when a shower is a LUXURY!

Here are some things your pelvic floor PT does care about:

  • You feel safe and comfortable - and in complete control of what is happening to your body

  • Your story - share whatever information you feel comfortable sharing

  • Your goals (what you want to be able to do after seeing your pelvic floor physical therapist)

Don’t let your worries stop you from seeking help from your pelvic floor physical therapist. We are NOT judging you. We truly don’t care about the things that you are stressing about. The things we do care about are the things that are helping you to feel HEALTHY and CONFIDENT in your body. Come see us at SHIFT Physical Therapy and Wellness. Don’t worry about shaving your legs. Don’t worry about feeling like you’re sharing TMI. We are here for YOU. We want you to share whatever information you WANT to share. We want you to feel comfortable. We want you to achieve your GOALS!!
