Hip Pain: Location. Location. Location.

Hippity, hoppity-OUCH! I can’t hop on this hip!

When it comes to hip pain, it’s all about location, location, location!

Groin or Inner Thigh Pain:
Groin or inner thigh pain is most likely related to problem with the hip joint such as underlying arthritis or issues with the labrum (cartilage ring that deepens the hip joint socket).

Pain on the Outside or Back of the Hip:
Pain on the outside portion of the hip or in the back (buttock) area may be related to issues such as bursitis, or problems with the muscles, tendons, or joints of the back, hip, or pelvis.

Referred Pain
Occasionally pain in the hip can also be related to low back issues. This is called referred pain.

Physical therapy can help with hip pain by:

  1. Identifying the cause of your pain.

  2. Decrease the pain that you are experiencing.

  3. Teach you appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises that target specific muscles to improve mobility, and hip and core strength.

  4. Provide hands on techniques to improve decrease tight muscles, improve mobility of the joint and assist with specific movements that might be difficult.

  5. Provide education regarding activity modification or changes that allow for movement without pain.
